Fabio, a 10-year-old American paint horse gelding, was referred to the Equine Medical Center last September by veterinarian Kent Allen, of Virginia Equine Imaging, after it was confirmed that Fabio had inflammation in his proximal suspensory ligament, which was not responding to shockwave treatment and rest.

A routine neurectomy and fasciotomy was completed by Norris Adams, clinical assistant professor of equine lameness and surgery, who was assisted by surgery resident Javier Martinez Lopez. Following surgery, Fabio completed two weeks of strict stall rest, then an additional two weeks of stall rest with careful, in-hand exercise twice a day before being turned out in a small paddock.

Fabio’s owner Lisa Snavely reports that “the surgery has seemed to work. We had our primary care veterinarian out for a soundness exam at the beginning of January, and at that time, we started him out with light riding. We have now started on short cantering sessions, and he has remained sound and is doing well. Thank you so much for such great care and for giving this boy back his step and comfort.”

Lisa is hoping that Fabio will return to competing in working hunter classes this summer with her daughter in the saddle!

All of us at the Equine Medical Center wish Fabio the best of luck during the upcoming show season!
