Dr. Halsmer, originally from Indiana, cultivated a passion for equine sports and aviation early in life—interests that led her to become an A-Traditional graduate of the United States Pony Club and a certified private pilot. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington. After teaching high school mathematics while continuing to ride competitively, she moved to Florida to pursue a professional career in horse training and riding.

While in Florida, she became involved in private, innovative veterinary research and is now the co-owner of three veterinary patents. She went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Her commitment to advancing veterinary ophthalmology has included collaborative research with both Texas A&M University and Michigan State University.

Dr. Halsmer recently completed a Small Animal Rotating Internship at Purdue University and aspires to specialize further in ophthalmology. She remains actively involved in equine sports and aviation, enjoys spending time outdoors, and shares her life with two beloved cats originally from Washington State.
