Mostafa Ghanem, DVM, MS, PhD

Mostafa Ghanem is an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, College Park campus of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and member of the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ghanem is a veterinarian and molecular epidemiologist. He serves as a liaison for CPCVM in the Washington metropolitan area to facilitate training opportunities and engagement with pubic and corporate entities located in the DC area.

Dr. Ghanem is an enthusiastic teacher and mentor who teaches a variety of classes at the graduate and professional student levels, such as Avian Medicine and Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases. He has trained international scholars on molecular epidemiology as well as taught molecular epidemiology in Kenya and Ethiopia.

Dr. Ghanem’s research program focuses on the development of advanced molecular diagnostics and typing schemes using next-generation sequencing for molecular typing and epidemiological investigation of infectious diseases of economic and public health significance pathogens related to poultry. His laboratory aims to harness the use and application of advanced molecular diagnostic and genotyping techniques in the surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases, in order to improve the health and wellbeing of  both poultry and humans. His extension program focuses on improving poultry health through communicating new research findings to poultry growers and stakeholders and policymakers for implementation and field application.

Prior joining VMCVM, Dr. Ghanem completed his postdoctoral training at The Ohio State University, USA, where he served as associate director of Infectious Diseases Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory (IDMEL).  He worked closely with The Ohio State University Global One Health Initiative (GOHi) team and participated in many One Health research and capacity building projects in Eastern Africa. 

He completed his PhD at The Ohio State University. During his PhD, he developed new tools for epidemiological outbreak investigation of avian mycoplasma species. Out of his PhD work, two invention reports were filed with The Ohio State University Technology Commercialization Office.

Dr. Ghanem received his veterinary and master degrees from Alexandria University, Egypt, where he worked as a poultry veterinarian for 5 years. 

He is the 2017 recipient of the Reed Rumsey Award from the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP). One of his papers was selected as the best paper published in the Avian Disease Journal in 2017.
