Lauren Maxey '08, DVM '13

Veterinarian at Banfield Pet Hospital in Alexandria, VA and current VVMA President

How VMCVM equipped me for the 'real world'...

VMCVM gave me the knowledge and the tools to become what I had always wanted to be, a veterinarian. I was also exposed to organized veterinary medicine through SCAVMA which has been a large part of my life post graduation.

Best part of being a VMCVM alum...

Because I work in Virginia, I have so many classmates nearby to meet up with. I also am able to travel to the veterinary school often for events, and who doesn't love Blacksburg?

A person who has inspired me...

My Mom. She's strong, motivated, open-hearted, and fun!

Biggest misconception about my job or industry...

That we are in it for the money. We're absolutely not.

Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...

Just do your best and that will be enough. Make sure to have fun. Your classmates will be some of your very best lifelong friends, so enjoy the time you have while all together.

Fondest college memory or tradition...

My seatmates I sat next to for three years in the classroom. I'm pretty sure they knew me better than I knew myself.

A cause I'm most passionate about... The most formative experience I've had...

I am very passionate about organized veterinary medicine and the importance of representation of our profession. Currently, I am the President of the VVMA and will soon step into the role of AVMA Alternate Delegate for Virginia.

Top of my bucket list...

That's tough...it's a tie between traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia or Egypt.

My favorite quote...

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
