Patrick McGlone (DVM '10)

Vice President of Veterinary Quality at Banfield Pet Hospital

McGlone currently lives in Charlotte, NC, with his wife Alida (his VMCVM classmate) and their two kids. He has been working for Banfield for the past 13 years, starting as an associate DVM, then a Chief of Staff, then Director, and now Vice President. McGlone and his wife also own Cabarrus Spay Neuter Clinic, so he is pretty good at surgery, but being the best leader he can be is his passion.

How VA-MD equipped me for the 'real world'...

I loved my time at VA-MD. Faculty was always dedicated to ensuring we could apply what we learned in the classroom to clinical practice. The option to track also 100% prepared me more for what I was most passionate about.

Best part of being a VMCVM alum...

The fact that the college invites us back with open arms every year at graduation and during the fall mentor/alum CE events!

Best advice I've gotten....

One of my mentors asked me this question and it is now part of my core: 'What do you want to be known for?'

How would you capture the essence of your work in a newspaper headline...

As Vice President of Veterinary Quality for Banfield Pet Hospital I oversee over 250 hospitals in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. I focus on developing leaders so they can provide more support and mentorship to other veterinarians.

My hidden talent...

I am an author too! Wrote a novel during vet school (ghost story/thriller), published it a year after.

Biggest misconception about my job or industry...

That corporate medicine is 'cookie-cutter'. Could not be further from the truth. We do want to prevent disease, not just treat it. We have quality standards that lead to the safest anesthesia in the world, resources to pilot and try cutting edge trials and initiatives, and tons of opportunities to grow. We have thousands of veterinarians that practice how they were taught to at school and beyond. Some perform acupuncture, orthopedic procedures, have urgent care days, dental or surgery focused days. Each hospital has its own culture and passions.

Words of encouragement to a current veterinary college student...

Always remember your why. You are here for a reason and although vet school is hard, it is not impossible. Don't forget to have fun too!

Fondest college memory or tradition...

Alpha Psi tailgating and football games. School-life balance is just as important as work-life balance.

A cause I'm most passionate about... The most formative experience I've had...

Mentoring and Teaching! Which I get to do every day. I also developed a Spay and Neuter Efficiency RACE approved CE that I love presenting to vet students and veterinarians.

My favorite quote...

When you believe in others, they will believe in themselves.

Being a VMCVM alumnus means...

Having a life-long community.
